From Saturday 16 March Kunsthal Rotterdam is presenting ‘Sirens’, a kinetic sound installation by artist and composer Joris Strijbos. His work is inspired by ongoing research on complex processes, such as organised systems in biology and digital technology. The way the individual birds interact in a flock, the process of algorithms in data networks – Strijbos unravels the complexity and translates the beauty he finds there to compositions of light and sound.

The audiovisual installations and media performances of Strijbos are situated at the intersection of science, art and technology. For Kunsthal Light #20 he has designed a site-specific installation consisting of rotating tubes with loudspeakers. The combination of the rotating sources of sound and the movement of the visitors results in an interactive composition that alludes to the mythological call of the sirens. The almost sacral sonorities contrast sharply with the robust physical appearance of the installation.

Joris Strijbos

Joris Strijbos (1981, Zaanstad) graduated in ArtScience from the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2010. He went on to study at the Royal Conservatoire The Hague. His work has been shown at festivals, in galleries and museums like Sonic Acts Festival – Amsterdam, Woodstreet Galeries - Pittsburgh, Van Gogh Museum – Amsterdam and Nuit Blanche – Paris.

Kunsthal Light

‘Kunsthal Light’ is the Kunsthal's talent development programme. Since 2011, this exhibition programme has especially focused on young artists who are able to make a ‘broad gesture’ in an original and artistic way. Three times a year, to this end the Kunsthal places HALL 6 (the over 25-meter-long display window along the ramp) at the disposal of an artist who is given free rein to make a site-specific work. In 2018, ‘Kunsthal Light’ is also made possible by the Mondriaan Fund.
