Exhibition Signac. Symphony of Colours
At 9:30, the exhibition Signac. Symphony of Colours will open especially for guests attending the opening breakfast. Nearly a hundred paintings bring Paul Signac’s world to life. Using dots and short brushstrokes, he and Georges Seurat sought a new way to capture colour and light on canvas: Pointillism.
Symphony of Colours showcases the influence Signac (1863–1935) had on artists of his time. The exhibition brings together his work with that of artists including Camille Pissarro, Théo van Rysselberghe, Georges Seurat and Jan Toorop. From Normandy and Brittany to Saint-Tropez and Rotterdam: discover sun-drenched landscapes, colourful portraits and vibrant harbours and seascapes.
Lecture and concert
From 11:00, you are warmly welcome to take your seat in the Auditorium. The programme begins with a short lecture by writer Jan Brokken on Paul Signac, his work and his special connection with the Netherlands.
At 11:15, the concert begins, specially curated for this occasion by the DoelenEnsemble under the direction of Maarten van Veen.
Signac was a great music lover and saw a strong connection between music and painting. He assigned opus numbers to various paintings and used musical terms such as ‘adagio’ and ‘presto’. Just as in music, the interplay of colour, rhythm and harmony played an important role for him.
The programme ends at 12:00. Afterwards, you are very welcome to visit the other exhibitions at the Kunsthal.
