What does everyday life in a city look like when you really pay attention? Helen Levitt (1913–2009) was one of the most important street photographers of the twentieth century. She turned her camera to life on the streets of New York: children at play, people meeting, passers-by and unexpected moments.
Levitt began photographing the streets of New York in the 1930s. She had a keen eye for the vibrancy and spontaneity of street life, with children and their play featuring prominently in her work. The exhibition Helen Levitt. City at Play brings together more than 220 photographs, a film and colour slides spanning over fifty years of her work.
Through her photographs, Levitt reveals how rich and remarkable seemingly ordinary moments can be: children playing in the spray of a fire hydrant, women whispering to each other in a doorway, a couple in love on the subway. Her photographs are never posed or sensational, but reveal a subtle sense of humour, tenderness and an eye for the everyday.
