In collaboration with the Willem de Kooning Academy, every year the Kunsthal Rotterdam presents a series of masterclasses – exclusively for students and Kunsthal Friends – by exceptional artists. After the inspiring masterclasses by such figures as photographer Peter Lindbergh, choreographer Conny Janssen, architect Rem Koolhaas, fashion artists Viktor&Rolf and artist and innovator Daan Roosegaarde, it is the turn of artist Rafaël Rozendaal. In connection with the exhibition ‘Trouble in Paradise. Collection Rattan Chadha’, Rafaël Rozendaal will give a masterclass in the Kunsthal auditorium.
During the masterclass Rafaël Rozendaal will go further into the development of computer art and the translation of impressions and experiences on the screen into physical artistic forms such as photographs, installations and sculptures. How do you use your computer? Do you make work for the internet, or do you use your computer as an instrument? A number of student portfolios will also be discussed during this masterclass. The official language of the Masterclass is English.
TROUBLE IN PARADISE
The masterclass is one of the events organised to accompany the exhibition ‘Trouble in Paradise’, that will open on Thursday 7 February. ‘Trouble in Paradise’ in the Kunsthal Rotterdam will present an extraordinary selection of contemporary art works from the private collection of art collector Rattan Chadha (1949, Delhi), the founder of Mexx and the hotel chain citizenM. This private collection – known as the KRC Collection – will be exhibited in the Kunsthal to a wide audience for the very first time. Rattan Chadha has selected works of art that reflect on human inadequacies, respond to the state of our society and inspire a sense of commitment to the world around us. At the heart of his collection is the human condition, with art that gets under your skin. From sex, drugs and rock ’n’ roll to deep melancholy and abstraction. In short: ‘Trouble in Paradise’!
‘Trouble in Paradise’ will feature a selection of over seventy works – varying from paintings and sculptures to installations and video art – by internationally renowned artists, including the installation ‘Random Fear (with mirrors)’ (2019) by Rafaël Rozendaal. Rozendaal uses colours, shapes and mirrors to create a site-specific work specially for this exhibition.
RAFAËL ROZENDAAL
Rafaël Rozendaal (1980) is a Dutch-Brazilian artist who currently lives in New York. Rozendaal uses the internet as his canvas. To him the worldwide web is a universe dominated by a perfectly organised chaos: a rigid framework filled with a constantly moving content. Rozendaal builds websites filled with colours and shapes - instead of words - and he also translates these images into carpets, haiku and installations. His work is regularly exhibited, not only in Europe and the U.S.A. but also in Asia and South America. He has worked with institutions such as the Centre Pompidou (Paris), Kunstverein Frankfurt (Germany), Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (Netherlands), Kawasaki City Museum (Japan), New Museum, New York (United States) Nam June Paik Art Center Seoul (Korea) and Kunsthal Rotterdam.
