Making Africa Festival
2 October, 2016 11:00 - 16:30
De Kunsthal stays in African mood with ‘Making Africa Festival’. In conjunction with Afrovibes and the Vitra Design Museum, on Sunday 2 October the Kunsthal is organising an exciting day for young and old with various performances, workshops and guided tours. And of course there will be African music and food. The Afrovibes Festival 2016 will offer several previews of young and innovative talent under the title Young & Urban Africa.
JUST A FEW OF THE ACTIVITIES…
Storyteller and theatre-maker Ogutu Muraya, well-known for the presentation of his story ‘Nobody knows my name’ and his performance in Afrovibes 2015, combines African roots and storytelling with his experiences of life in the Netherlands in an intimate setting.
Spectators of Lady Africa can experience a dazzling fashion show that targets African fashion. With her Dutch and African roots and her innovative approach, Lady Africa builds a bridge between Africa and the rest of the world. She imports leading fashion and accessory labels from promising designers in Africa. Her vision and artistic sensibility connect cultures and bring colour to the streets of the Netherlands.
Amartey’s sound, known from his track ‘Nobody like you’ and winner of the FunX SuperSongDag talent show, can be described as Afrobeat with pop influences. Amartey drew inspiration from people around him and from vocalists like R. Kelly, Michael Jackson and African artists like Kojo Antwi and Castro.
And last but not least… Niels Crama, eye surgeon and collector of C-Stunners, will give a lecture on these unusual eyewear designs by Cyrus Kabiru. He will discuss Cyrus Kabiru and how he hit upon the idea of making C-Stunners. He will also talk about his own discovery of this eccentric eyewear and why he finds it so fantastic. You can make the fanciest eyewear in the KunsthalLAB inspired by the African artist Cyrus Kabiru. Take a look at his C-Stunners in the exhibition first.
