Renowned Surinamese writer and historian Cynthia McLeod, known for her novel "The Cost of Sugar" will give a (Dutch spoken) lecture at the Kunsthal on the occasion of the opening of the exhibition Acknowledge Rebuild. On Saturday, 24 June, she will talk about the slavery past of Suriname and the Netherlands, what exactly happened and how this could have taken place.

Impressive oeuvre

McLeod has built up an impressive oeuvre of historical novels that vividly describe various periods and events in Surinamese history. With her novel "The Cost of Sugar" McLeod sheds a light on sugar culture in the 18th century. The successful book instantly made Cynthia McLeod the most famous writer in Suriname. In the Netherlands too, she quickly made a name for herself and receives a lot of recognition for her work.

A unique perspective

As a specialist in the field of oral history and the slavery past, Cynthia McLeod makes a valuable contribution to recording and telling stories that might otherwise be lost. The lecture provides a unique perspective on the events of the slavery past and the impact of slavery on Surinamese and Dutch society. The language of the lecture is Dutch.

REGISTRATION

The expenses to attend Cyntia McLeod's lecture is €16,50. A ticket admits you to the lecture and all exhibitions in the Kunsthal. Kunsthal Friends have free admission. Museumkaart, Rotterdampas and VriendenLoterij VIP card are also valid for this event.

ACKNOWLEDGE REBUILD

In collaboration with Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Kunsthal Rotterdam presents Acknowledge Rebuild – Wunderkammers of Rotterdam’s Colonial Past. This ‘total installation’ curated by the artist patricia kaersenhout on the occasion of the Slavery Memorial Year, will feature work by emerging artists. Read more about the exhibition here.
