Friday Night LIVE

Start your weekend with Friday Night LIVE! On each third Friday of the month you will be welcome at the Kunsthal for bites&drinks, music&performances, and above all for an exciting and inspiring programme infused with a generous dose of art. For each edition a different Rotterdam partner will be running the show. On Friday, January 19th, it's the turn of RIDCC – Rotterdam International Duet Choreography Competition – and you can enjoy a vibrant program centered on dance.

For Friday Night LIVE, the Kunsthal will hand over the keys and offer a platform to a Rotterdam partner active in the fields of film, spoken word, dance, music, fashion, and theatre. Join in and watch, listen, party, and mingle at Friday Night LIVE X RIDCC. All exhibitions are open throughout the evening and, together with the Auditorium, form the decor for many pop-up dance performances!

Transience

17:00-22:00
Maciej Kuźmiński

Transience is a site-specific live installation: visitors from the future or from another world occupy the contemporary urban environment. Their intervention in contemporary reality creates a dissonance and invites the public to engage in a situation where the familiar suddenly becomes strange. The concept of transience is central: we live in uncertain times, and the idea that everything can change profoundly and quickly, without warning, is one of the central features of our current zeitgeist.

In 2021, Maciej Kuźmiński (Poland) won the Codarts Partner Award with his duet ‘event horizon’ and for RIDCC 2023 he brought his live installation ‘transience’ to Rotterdam.

Mermaids

17:30-17:45 & 20:10-20:25
Dereck Cayla

The duet Mermaids follows the path of two bodies towards their own pulsation. This initiatory path, made possible by dance, reconnects us to a deep nature, it's inspired by the hybrid of nature and human that Mermaids can represent. Chris Watson's sound compositions conjure up an inner world as well as the vastness of spaces. It is the same connection that lives in the dancers: their first pulsation is explored at the quasi-cellular level. The infinitely small and the infinitely large meet in a common vibration.

With his duet ‘Mermaids’ Dereck Cayla (France) participated in the second edition of RIDCC in 2019.

Breath with Me a Moment

18:10-18:30 & 21:35-21:55
Or Marin

Breath with Me a Moment’ is a glimpse in which a window opens for intimate dialogue between two dancers. What do we mean when we speak about true intimacy? How fragile closeness is. Is it what we call love, passion, honest conversation, in-depth knowledge? The duet proposes intimacy, a shared breathing, a moment of close connection that encompasses the various colors of intimacy. The meeting of two bodies through shared breath into a harmonica, produces a note to the concept of intimacy, vocalizes the closeness, the love, the passion. It connects the two bodies and turns them into one musical instrument with two lung spaces and one note that emerges from their bond. The sound of intimacy that is revealed to us in a unified musical layer serves as a soundtrack to the bodies in their release into one another in a human, abstract, sensory way.

Or Marin (Israël) participated in RIDCC 2023, where she won the Partner Award of the MiR Dance Company Gelsenkirchen with her duet 'Breathe with Me a Moment'.

Into the blue

18:50-19:40
Danielle Huyghe

What is the effect of poor sleep on emotional and physical functioning? Concentration problems, exhaustion and serious disturbance of the biorhythm are the starting point of this excitable, gripping performance under high tension. ‘Into the blue’ is based on the choreographer's own experience of insomnia, as well as extensive research.

In 2021, Danielle Huyghe (Belgium) entered the duet competition with the work ‘Out of the blue’. For Friday Night LIVE, Danielle Huyghe shows her piece 'Into the blue'.

MEGASTRUCTURE

20:50-21:20
Sarah Baltzinger & Isaiah Wilson

MEGASTRUCTURE draws with curiosity the trajectory of two bodies in constant cohabitation. A piece themed around intimacy whose dance material forms strange and perilous associations. This duo is like a puzzle whose pieces are constantly being dismantled, searched for, tested and reinvented. MEGASTRUCTURE is a choreographic piece without sound composition, without decor, whose natural musicality is generated by the bodies on stage in a percussive energy.

Sarah Baltzinger (Luxembourg) and Isaiah Wilson (France) were the big winners at the RIDCC 2023 grand finale, taking home the RIDCC's main prize for 'MEGASTRUCTURE', the XL Production Award worth €100,000, as well as many Partner Awards.

FILM: Don't Kiss .mov

17:00-18:40 & 19:40-22:00
The award-winning dance film 'Don't Kiss .mov' is directed by choreographer Fabio Liberti and filmmaker Carl Olsson. The short film (8 min) depicts the magnetic tension between two men, entwined in a kiss. 'Don't Kiss .mov' explores the purpose of this kiss. Is it passion, connection, expression, or commitment.

MINI EXPO: Mark David

17:00 - 22:00
Mark David’s portrait & advertising photography ranges from a classic characteristic picture to magical, larger-than-life, cinematic, key-visuals. Since the second edition of RIDCC, David  has created the annual campaign image. Especially for Friday Night LIVE he will present photos of former RIDCC participants.
