Free Heri Heri For All
30 June, 2024 14:30 - 16:30
With Keti Koti, we annually commemorate and celebrate the abolition of slavery on July 1, 1863. In remembrance of the slavery past and to connect the past with the present, people across the country can enjoy the Surinamese dish Heri Heri together, free of charge. In collaboration with TENT, Kunstinstituut Melly, and Cool aan de Gang, Kunsthal Rotterdam invites everyone to participate and enjoy a free Heri Heri meal on Sunday 30 June. Free Heri Heri For All is an initiative by KIP Republic and collaborating partners.
Come together and eat
Free Heri Heri aims to unite citizens and make the commemoration inclusive and accessible. Moreover, sharing a meal together provides an opportunity for dialogue and exchange about the significance of the day and sharing knowledge about history.

Heri Heri is a Surinamese dish that originated from what remained on the plantation and was cultivated and consumed by enslaved people. The dish, as we know it today, consists of boiled sweet potatoes, cassava, yellow and green banana, salted fish (bakkeljauw), an egg, and garnish.
