Documentary In the Spirit of Calder
24 February, 2024 17:30
On Saturday 24 February, the documentary In the Spirit of Calder will premiere at Kunsthal Rotterdam. In a poetic, visual essay, director Marjoleine Boonstra explores how the work of Alexander Calder (1898-1976) has been a source of inspiration for various contemporary artists. Calder was the first to set sculpture in motion and wanted to create experiences through his work, as his grandson Sandy Rower explains in the film.
The artists Rosa Barba, Žilvinas Kempinas, and Ernesto Neto all worked as artists in residence in Calder’s studio in the French village of Saché — a very special and inspiring experience. The film shows how elements like gravity, space, time, sound, and music connect these artists to Calder. Filmmakers Marjoleine Boonstra (direction and camera) and Lies Janssen (research and production) first came up with the idea for the documentary after seeing the Kunsthal exhibition Calder NOW (2021).
