27 January, 2019 13:00 - 15:30

Immerse yourself in IFFR’s Deep Focus Blackout exhibition on Sunday January 27, during a special artists’ tour and performance. Blackout features international artists who use the photographic slide (transparency) medium to raise questions about our lack of a collective memory. Using the now obsolete 35mm carousel slide projector, the artists shed light on forgotten, hidden and intentionally lost ‘histories’.

Curator Julian Ross will give a short introduction to the exhibition at 13:00 hrs, followed by a ‘speed date’ tour of eight of the exhibits, in which the artists themselves will explain more about their work and motivation. Meet Prapat Jiwarangsan (Thailand), Nguyen Trinh Thi (Vietnam), Raha Raissnia (Iran/USA), Kristina Benjocki (The Netherlands), Aura Satz (UK), Praneet Soi (India/The Netherlands), Hannah Dawn Henderson (UK/The Netherlands) and Floris Vanhoof (Belgium).

After a short break, the artist Cauleen Smith will give a performance of Black Utopia LP in the auditorium, starting at 14:15 hrs. Black Utopia LP was first created in 2012 and is a continually evolving performance using a slide projector and vinyl LP compiled by Smith. The performance interweaves subjects such as the artist’s own research into the jazz musician Sun Ra, afro-futurism, and the African diaspora. With the interplay of sounds, images and narrative, Smith creates a dynamic, musical flow.
